The Pomperaug girls swimming and diving team won the CIAC Class M championship at SCSU on Monday, Nov. 14, 2022.
CIACPomperaug celebrated its second championship in the past nine days when it captured the CIAC Class M crown Monday night at Southern Connecticut State University.
The Panthers, who won the SWC title on Nov. 5, scored 707.5 points to finish well ahead of runner-up Guilford, which netted 564.5 points. Wethersfield was third with 458, followed by Bethel/Immaculate (403) and Lyman Hall (350) in the top five.
It’s the third state championship in program history for Pomperaug, which won Class M in 2013 and Class L in 2009.
The Panthers won it with depth, as its only individual victory came from senior Margaret Rutledge in the 500 freestyle (5:11.43).
Olivia Herbert, a senior with Bethel/Immaculate, was a double-winner in the 200 individual medley (2:07.57) and 100 butterfly (57.44), and Joel Barlow junior Audrey Gil won twice in the 50 freestyle (24.00) and 100 freestyle (52.59).
Wethersfield won the 200 freestyle (1:39.01) and 400 freestyle (3:40.80) relays.
Also winning were Guilford in the 200 medley relay (1:51.85); Brookfield senior Mia Hatzis in the 200 freestyle (1:54.42); Lyman Hall senior Elise Richardson in the 100 backstroke (58.24); and Rockville Jocleyn Niemczyk in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.45).
