Connecticut Girls swimming and diving top performers, meets to watch (Oct. 14)

TOP PERFORMERS

Julia Barto, Cheshire: Barto, a junior, won the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.30) an 500 freestyle (5:17.60) during the Rams’ 92-82 win over Lauralton Hall at the Cheshire Community Pool on Tuesday. She also swam one leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay (4:02,82)

Natalia Ferranto, Darien: Ferranto won the 50 freestyle (24.99) and swam the anchor legs of the first-place 200 medley (1:51.09) and 200 freestyle (3:44.35) relays during Darien’s 106-78 win in Greenwich on Wednesday.

Audrey Gil, Joel Barlow: Gil, a sophomore, broke two school records during the Falcons’ loss to Brookfield on Tuesday. She set a new mark of 24.52 in the 50 freestyle, breaking the old school record of 25.09 set in 2019, and her time of 54.67 in the 100 freestyle broke her own record of 54.47. She also holds school records in the 100 butterfly (58.96) and as part of the 200 freestyle relay team (1:45.18).

Lauren Hinckley, East Lyme: Hinckley, a senior, took first place in the 100 butterfly (1P10/21) and also won the diving competition with a score of 159 during the Vikings’ 87-62 win over Ledyard on Tuesday.

Isabelle Hodum, Sheehan: Hodum captured four victories, including in the 200 freestyle (2:09.71) and 500 freestyle (5:54.23), to help the Titans top Mercy, 92-89, on Wednesday. She also swam the anchor leg of the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Laura Letellier, Fitch/Stonington/Wheeler/New London: The junior won the 200 individual medley (2:25.74) and was part of the first-place 200 medley (2:02.64) and 200 freestyle (1:54.71) relays during a 90-69 win over Haddam-Killingworth on on Tuesday.

Grace Mahon, Amity: The senior was a triple-winner during the Spartans’ 96-60 win over Jonathan Law on Tuesday, taking first in the 50 freestyle (25.25) and 100 freestyle (55.61) and swimming the anchor leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:54.56).

Lily Malone, Ludlowe: The sophomore won four events in a 101-84 victory over Norwalk/McMahon. She was first in the 50 freestyle (28.42) and 100 freestyle (1:04.87) and was part of the winning 200 freestyle (1:59.93) and 400 freestyle (4:16.45) relays.

Kathleen Murray, Ludlowe: Murray, a junior, finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:39.40) and 100 butterfly (1:07.02), and was also part of the winning 200 medley (2:09.15) and 400 freestyle (4:16.45) during a 101-84 decision over the Norwalk/McMahon co-op on Tuesday.

Avery Potyrala, Cheshire: The senior won the 200 freestyle (2:02.86) and 100 freestyle (55.20) and was part of the Rams’ winning 200 freestyle relay (1:49.29) during a 92-82 victory over Lauralton Hall at the Cheshire Community Pool on Tuesday.

Mikayla Rapuano, North Haven: The senior won the 200 freestyle (2:07.28) and 100 butterfly (1:01.08), and was part of the first-place 200 medley (2:05.13) and 400 freestyle (4:07.71) relays to help North Haven top Mercy 92-84 on Tuesday.

Miller Ward, Darien: Ward won four events during the Blue Wave’s 106-78 victory in Greenwich on Wednesday. She was first in the 200 individual medley (2:07.37) and 100 freestyle (54.88), and was part of the winning 200 medley (1:51.09) and 400 freestyle (3:44.35) relays.

MEETS TO WATCH

Staples at Greenwich, Monday, 4:30: Staples features one of the state’s top swimmers in Annam Olasewere, and Greenwich is deep as usual. Many of the swimmers in this meet will star in the FCIAC final at this same site on Nov. 4.

Darien at New Canaan, Wednesday, 3:30: Darien, the defending Class L champion, already has big victories over Wilton and Greenwich this season and looks to add one more when it plays at rival New Canaan.

Newtown at Weston, Oct. 21, Friday, 4: Two of the SWC’s top contenders, both unbeaten heading into meets of Oct. 14, clash with defending conference champion Weston hosting.

Cheshire at Amity, Friday, Oct. 21, 6:45: Cheshire had won nine straight SCC championships before being edged by Amity by 15 points for the 2021 crown. Both teams are having solid seasons and are in the title hunt again.
