Beauty & Essex to open Connecticut restaurant at Mohegan Sun

Beauty & Essex, a New American style restaurant with locations in New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, is opening at Mohegan Sun in the fall of 2023, the casino resort announced Thursday.

The 11,000-square-foot restaurant by Tao Group Hospitality will be located in the Casino of the Sky, near Starbucks. TAO Mohegan Sun, by the same group, opened on the property in March 2021.

“Mohegan Sun boasts incredible restaurant offerings, and we are looking forward to adding Beauty & Essex to its culinary collection,” said Ralph Scamardella, chief culinary officer of Tao Group Hospitality, in a statement. “TAO Mohegan Sun has been a great success and we are thrilled to build on our existing relationship.”

Created by chef/co-creator Chris Santos, Beauty & Essex serves "global cuisine" with shareable dishes and new twists on classic cocktails. Signature dishes include grilled cheese, smoked bacon and tomato soup dumplings; classic beef Wellington, togarashi spiced tuna, truffled mac and cheese and new menu options exclusive to Mohegan Sun.

Santos is a New England native who grew up in Rhode Island, and will be participating in the upcoming Celebrity Chef Dine Around at the 2023 Sun Wine & Food Fest in January.

"I’m very excited to bring this restaurant to Connecticut," he said in a statement. "New England has always been my home and I know Beauty & Essex is a perfect fit."

The Beauty & Essex menu in New York features raw bar items, "jewels on toast" featuring avocado, butter-basted lobster and bone marrow, and shareables like plant-based chicken arepas, tacos, Thai-style deep fried shrimp and grilled pizzettas. Larger plates include pastas, meatballs, a Beauty & Essex burger, Peruvian chicken, fish and seafood entrees, steaks and chops.
