Needtobreathe, a South Carolina-based band that has been rocking for nearly 20 years now, is on the road with an acoustic tour that stops at Stamford’s Palace Theatre Saturday, March 16.

Back in 2017, the Grammy Award-nominated rock group’s members decided to take a breather, which for this outfit meant unplugging and playing a 10-city acoustic tour that led to the album “Acoustic Live, Vol. 1,” released late last year.

“We are in a band that likes to do something different,” keyboardist Josh Lovelace told “We like to change directions. … The acoustic record was a thing that we always wanted to do.”

Lovelace said the band — featuring brothers Bear Rinehart (vocals, guitar) and Bo Rinehart (guitar, vocals), Seth Bolt (bass, vocals), and Josh Lovelace (keys, vocals) — finds that the acoustic shows are a nice change from their rock concerts.

“We are known for our rock and roll shows,” he said. “Sometimes, it is hard to stop and take a breath to explain where a song came from or what we were thinking when the song was conceived. Normally, there is one guy talking all of the time. This way, we all get to interact and talk to the fans. It is really fun. It is a new thing that we had never done, but it felt very natural and comfortable once we did it a couple times.”

Though often labeled a Christian-rock band because of their initial successes on Christian radio, Needtobreathe has resisted that categorization, all the while delivering a sound with hints of Southern rock, pop and even some electronic influences.
