“Annie,” the timeless musical based on Harold Gray’s comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” will be performed at Thomaston Opera House.

Known for such tunes as “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “Tomorrow,” about better days ahead, it tells the story of a fiery little girl, Annie, who lives in an orphanage. It’s during The Great Depression, when many children were orphaned because their families had no way to support them. Annie is desperate to be reunited with her long-lost parents, but doesn’t know where to find them.

When she’s selected to spend Christmas with Oliver Warbucks, a seemingly cold-hearted billionaire, Annie charms him and everyone else. Warbucks decides to help her by offering a huge amount of money to the couple who can prove they are her parents. But things go awry when Annie’s greedy guardian, Miss Hannigan, comes up with a scheme to steal the reward.

The 40th anniversary of the original Broadway production of this classic was just last year. After opening in 1977 and winning a Tony Award for Best Musical, the show ran for nearly six years. Perfect for all ages, “Annie” has been performed all over the world.

“Annie” features music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and book by Thomas Meehan. The show will be directed in Thomaston by Mensah Robinson, and features MaddieKay Harris as Annie.
