GREENWICH — In an email to Greenwich Time, Darien resident Joe Calve chronicled how he received an unexpected present during a Christmas visit to the Splurge gift store at 39 Lewis St., in downtown Greenwich.

“So I’m grabbing some holiday gifts today (Wednesday) at Splurge, a small, eclectic gift shop in Greenwich. The woman at the register asks for my name. ‘Calve,’ I say. ‘C-A-L-V-E.’

“She looks up from the register. Suddenly. Too suddenly. ‘Oh, my God,’ she shrieks at the woman checking out another customer next to her. ‘It’s him!’ I’m freaked out. ‘What?’ I say. ‘What did I do?’ I had visions of a long-forgotten arrest warrant dancing in my head.

“‘We have your bag.’ She looks at the woman next to her, who had burst into a wide grin. ‘On the top shelf. In the back.’ The woman runs out and a few minutes later runs back with a shopping bag filled with toys and one big, nicely wrapped package.

“‘This is yours. You left it last Christmas Eve. We tried to find you. We called and called. We were so worried.’ She hands me the bag. Sure enough it’s the bag I couldn’t find last Christmas. Still full of toys, games and a pretty handmade vase for my wife Kristin.

“‘We were afraid something had happened to you,’ she said. It seems they were googling for an obit with my name on it. By now the whole shop was beaming. They could not believe it. I couldn’t believe it either — how dumb and lucky I am.

“That’s my Christmas tale. If you’re ever in Greenwich, be sure to stop by Splurge. You won’t regret — or forget — it. It’s where holiday miracles happen.”
