At Home in Darien has introduced a voucher program that will provide an affordable transportation option for Darien seniors and residents with disabilities. The executive director of At Home, Gina Blum, said “the program provides for taxi rides at 50% off the regular price.” Vouchers can be purchased from At Home in Darien at half the value of taxi costs and the rider would simply pay with vouchers.
“This program was created to help Darien seniors maintain their independence as they age,” said Blum. Transportation is the main necessity for seniors and although At Home in Darien already provides safe and reliable rides Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekends, other times of day, and holidays are not available. That’s where the half-price taxi voucher comes into play to provide seniors and those with disabilities with more affordable options.
Darien resident and participant in the new voucher program, Betty Pietsch, is glad the program is now in place, saying “the vouchers have helped a great deal.”
Pietsch volunteers at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and Greenwich Hospital. In order to not leave her car in public parking for a number of nights, she uses her vouchers for late night taxis.
Pietsch continued, “It makes a big difference. It’s not a question of not wanting to drive, but the fact that if something unexpected comes up, it is very comforting to know that you could call and get someone.”
The vouchers can also be used for last minute taxi rides or for travel beyond At Home’s service area of Darien, Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan. The vouchers can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year for travel to many destinations.
At Home in Darien has also collaborated with Eveready Transportation, a reputable taxi company that has been in business for over 30 years, and operates in Darien, Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan. Eveready Transportation can also take reservations and provide rate estimates for rides.Vouchers are available for purchase from the At Home In Darien’s office, 2 Renshaw Road, Monday through Friday 9 to 4 with cash or check payable to “At Home In Darien.” Darien seniors or disabled residents can only receive the vouchers. Proof of age, residency, and/or disability is required. Vouchers are non-transferable.
