Darien Public Schools will close for the second day in a row Thursday due to downed power lines and trees down blocking roads according to Schools Superintendent Dan Brenner. The schools were closed Wednesday in anticipation of the storm.

A strong winter storm hit the area Wednesday piling heavy snow on trees until mid-evening Wednesday night. The wind and snow knocked down power lines and trees causing many blocked roads and wire fires in town throughout Wednesday night.

Darien Police  posted on Instagram Wednesday evening after responding to dozens of reports of downed trees and power lines. At one point an SUV and plow truck collided on Tokeneke Road resulting in the SUV flipping over. The driver was stuck in the vehicle but was eventually removed and did not appear to be seriously harmed. Middlesex Road, Hollow Tree Ridge Road, Holmes Avenue and West Avenue were all blocked or partially blocked Wednesday night. There were various reports of wires down and/or on fire.

The Darien Library will have a delayed opening at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Metro-North suspended service until further notice mid-Wednesday evening and has announced this morning that they will operate on a reduced schedule.

As of Thursday at 5 a.m., 754 or 9% of Eversource customers in Darien were without power.
