Wave by the Numbers: Football honors, hoops stars, and hockey wins

A look back at some football and a look ahead to a little college lacrosse are featured in this week’s Wave by the Numbers, which also touches on a key ice hockey win, and a big night for two Darien girls hoops captains.


Consecutive seasons in which the Darien Blue Wave football team has won the Kelly Award, given by the Walter Camp Foundation to the No. 1 high school football team in Connecticut. The foundation presented the award during its annual Breakfast of Champions on Saturday at the Omni Hotel in New Haven.


Blue Wave football players who were named to the 2017 Walter Camp All-Connecticut football teams. They include OL Michael Neary, LB Connor Fay, and Connor Tienken on the first team, and DL Charlie Zuro on the second team.


Consecutive years in which the Wave has appeared in the state football finals. Darien lost the first two to New Canaan in Class L, but has since won three straight Class LL titles, beating Shelton 39-7 in 2015, Ridgefield 28-7 in 2016, and Greenwich in 2017.


Date of the men’s lacrosse game between the Vermont Catamounts and Virginia Cavaliers, which will be played at New Canaan’s Dunning Field. Vermont’s roster includes former Blue Wave stars Ryan Cornell, a freshman goalie, and Liam Rischmann, a sophomore midfielder, as well as Matt Sealy, a sophomore middie from Darien who graduated from the Brunswick School.


Score of the Darien boys ice hockey team’s victory over the Greenwich Cardinals on Saturday at the Darien Ice House. The Wave had a 2-0 lead after one period before Greenwich came back to tie it at 2-2 in the second. Hunter Hazleton netted the winner with 4:01 remaining, handing the Cardinals their first loss of the season.


Combined points for Darien seniors Katie Ramsay and Christine Fiore — 20 each — during Friday’s girls basketball win over the Brien McMahon Senators. Fiore netted 10 points in the first quarter, as the Wave scored the game’s first 18 points. Darien won, 46-24, and is 5-5 this season.


Darien’s winning time in the 4×800 relay during the SCC Coaches Invitational, held Saturday in New Haven. The Wave’s team included senior Kerry Blatney, and juniors Daphne Cutler, Eva Finn and Cameron Appleby.


Number of undefeated teams remaining in FCIAC girls ice hockey after Darien defeated Greenwich 1-0, and Greenwich defeated New Canaan 4-1 during the past week. Each of those three teams now has one loss — New Canaan is 6-1 and Darien and Greenwich are 5-1. Darien’s lone loss was a 2-1 defeat by New Canaan back on Dec. 23.


Players who scored for the Darien girls ice hockey team in Monday’s 9-1 win over the Wilton/Norwalk/Brien McMahon co-op. Sally Cassidy and Kate Bellissimo each scored twice, while Olivia Toscano, Shea van den Broek, Lucie Edwards, Caitlin Chan and Catherine Martin had one apiece.
