Pokorny nets hat trick as Darien ice hockey trips Trinity, 8-2

Hudson Pokorny had a hat trick and Will Dickson dished out four assists as the Darien boys ice hockey defeated the Trinity Catholic Crusaders, 8-2, in their FCIAC opener Wednesday night at Terry Conners Rink.

Trinity, which was playing with a short roster, kept it close for much of the first two periods and was trailing 3-2 when Pokorny netted his third goal late in the second period.

Darien then blew the game open with four goals in the third period, including two in one minute for Griffin Martens.

The result ended a four-game slide for Darien, which is now 2-6 overall, while Trinity Catholic is 0-4. It was also the first official FCIAC contest for both teams, with the Wave starting the conference schedule on a good note.

Pokorny started the scoring for the Wave in the first period, but Trinity’s Jack Kinihan answered and the teams went to the second frame tied at 1-1.

After the first intermission Rob Stewart netted the go-ahead goale with an assist from Parker McLane, and Pokorny followed with his second tally for a 3-1 lead. Jack Levato scored for the Crusaders to cut the deficit to one, but Pokorny completed his hat trick for a 4-2 lead after two periods.

Bennett McDermott made it a 5-2 game early in the third stanza, and Will Johnston netted a shortie for the wave’s sixth goal. Martens’ two goals finished the scoring at 8-2.

Darien will be featured on the HAN Network in its next game, as the Wave hosts the Greenwich Cardinals at 6 p.m, Saturday, at the Darien Ice House. It’s the second meeting of the season between the two perennial FCIAC contenders, with Greenwich winning the first clash, 4-3, during the Winter Classic at the Greenwich Skating Club on Dec. 30.

Saturday’s live coverage is part of an ice hockey doubleheader on HAN, which will also carry New Canaan’s game against Northwest Catholic at 3:50 p.m.
