Updated 11:09am — “Greenwich, (it’s) what we’ve all been waiting for,” said Darien senior captain Mitch Pryor of the football season finale-to-be on Saturday. “The whole season has been leading up to this game.”

Three seed Darien (11-1) plays undefeated No. 1 Greenwich 11am Dec. 9 at Boyle Stadium in Stamford in the Class LL final.

We’re just going to try to play solid defense, like we have all year long.

The Wave is two-time state champ.

“We all knew it was coming,” said Pryor. “And we’re ready for it.”

It will be the first time the two teams meet in a season that unusually did not have them play during the regular slate.

“It’s a tall order,” said Wave coach Rob Trifone. “Because Greenwich is the best team in the state right now.”

And now we’ll find out for sure about that.

“They’re like us, they’re spread (offense),” said Trifone. “You’re going to see 3-by-1, 2-by-2 sets. You know (Rams coach) Johnny Marinelli is extremely innovative.”

And the name of next door’s storied coaching family alone, is evocative, of course, of one extremely vexing Thanksgiving Day for the Wave. So expect a shade or two of TB II.

But the opponents do not hold the sole family connection to the championship game.

“I’ve got cousins on Greenwich — all my cousins live in Greenwich — and I can’t wait to play them,” said Darien senior lineman Sean O’Malley. “So it will be a fun game.”

Fun on the day. Lots of work getting ready from today.

“(Greenwich) will have several wrinkles we’ll try to prepare for,” said Trifone. “And we’re just going to try to play solid defense, like we have all year long. And we’ve got to move the ball consistently against them.”
