Darien churches gearing up to ‘Feed My Starving Children’

Charlie Emel, and John and William Gedney recently hosted a lemonade and popsicle stand and raised $30, enough for 136 meals, in one hour which will go towards the Darien Feed My Starving Children event.

Preparations are underway for Darien’s fourth annual Feed My Starving ChildrenMobilePack event, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21, at Middlesex Middle School.

The event is hosted by Darien’s 11 local churches and co-sponsored by the Council for Darien School Parents. The event offers local volunteers a chance to provide hope and life to starving children. Each day, approximately 18,000 children die from starvation all around the world.

The Darien event continues to be a great success.

In 2011 more than 1,500 children and adults from Darien volunteered their time and energy to put together over 300,000 MannaPack rice enough to feed 832 starving children a meal a day for a year. Meals packed in the 2011 Darien FMSC Event were sent to needy children in Haiti, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Since the first Darien “Feed my Starving Children” event in 2009 the Darien community has packed 760,000 life saving meals.

This year is significant, as the 2012 Darien event has the opportunity to bring the grand total meals packed by our community to one million.

The cost to buy the bulk food, prepare the meals and package them is $52,800. Approximately 1,200 to 1,500 volunteers will be needed for the 2012 event and groups and teams are encouraged to sign up together (e.g. sports teams, youth organizations).

Children age 8 and above can participate in actually packing the meals. Volunteer sign-up will begin in late September. In addition, a service of prayer and dedication will be held on Oct. 17 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

A Christian no-profit founded in 1987, Feed My Starving Children tackles world hunger by sending volunteer-packed, nutritious meals to nearly 70 countries, where they’re used to operate orphanages, schools, clinics, and other building blocks of healthy communities. Last year, the group produced 133 million meals, maintained its seventh consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator, and spent 93% of total donations directly on feeding the hungry.
