Outgoing captain, shortstop hit .404, batted in nine runs, played big at states

Class of 2012 consistent hitter Thomas Carruthers was named Blue Wave baseball MVP for last season at the team banquet recently.

Tapped for the honor at the Country Club of Darien, the captain, shortstop and pitcher batted .404 last spring knocking in nine runs, scoring 18 and connecting for a homer.

Carruthers will be attending Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the fall.

Coach Mike Scott announced captains for the 2013 season at the event with Andrew Maley, a first baseman, and pitcher Mackenzie Glavin named.

After qualifying for the Class L state tournament last month as the 33 seed, Darien (10-13) won two playoff games, including a first round upset of the No. 1 seed Cheney Tech, before losing in the second round to No. 16 Daniel Hand of Madison, finishing an up-and-down season on an up-note at states.
