The long run: Ostberg 3rd at Northeast Regionals, moves on to national race

Crossing the line in third, Alex Ostberg excelled in the Foot Locker race in Van Cortlandt Park.

Alex Ostberg’s runaway season’s not over yet.

Nor is it going to be much before Christmas.

Ostberg’s third place finish at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. or Saturday qualified the Wave’s leading runner for a place in the national championships later this month.

Ostberg ran the course in 15:22.5 in N.Y.

The Foot Locker National Championship is set for Dec. 14 in San Diego, CA.

“Alex was amazing today,” said Darien High boys’ cross country and track coach Tyson Kaczmarek. “He had to be nervous. But man, he is so well prepared for big races. He continues to excel as the competition level increases. I’m so proud of him.”

The top 10 runners at each regional race make it to the National Championship meet, producing a total of 40 runners for the final. Regions include four: Northeast, South, Midwest and West.

Ostberg is the Northeast’s only junior finishing in the topt 10.

Alex Ostberg races through the Bronx on Saturday.

“At the beginning of the year we were thinking about running this race just as a dry run for senior year,” Kaczmarek said. “Man, was I wrong. We kind of noticed about half way through the season that Alex’s workouts were incredibly strong. That was when the season was turning into something very, very special.”

Ostberg’s had to roar back from broken bones to do it.

“Last year at this time Alex was recovering from a broken fibula suffered in the FCIAC Championship race,” added Kaczmarek. “What a difference a year makes.”
