While it’s always a healthy place to begin with, a new annual focus on health returned to the Darien YMCA Saturday.

“Healthy Kids Day is a national YMCA event,” said Jennifer Gardner, CEO, “really to promote kids’ health and activity and staying active throughout the summer.

Volunteers Fiona Rooney, 13, left, and Kaitlyn Kirby, 14, both of Darien, talk to kids about the importance of water safety.

Various lessons regarding health, safety and nutrition were taught to kids by several volunteer individuals and groups. There were also fitness opportunities, along with a visit from the Noroton Fire Department.

While it had previously taken place in town several years ago, Gardner thought it would be worthwhile to revitalize the event, as it happens annual among the 2,700 YMCAs around the nation.

“It’s promoting health, but also promoting the great things we offer to the community,” she said.
