The honors keep rolling in for Mairead Clas.
The Darien High freshman runner earned All-State honors at the State Open Thursday at Wickham Park in East Hartford. Clas finished 23rd overall — sixth among FCIAC runners — and was the second freshman to cross the finish line.
“This performance is consistent with her league results throughout the year,” said head coach Steve Norris.
Clas’ latest stellar performance comes only a week after helping to lead the Darien High girls cross country team to fifth place, with 143 points, just one point behind fourth-place conference foe Wilton, in the Class L championship race, also held at Wickham Park.
In the Class L race, Clas placed fifth overall at 19:43, a mere one second behind New Milford senior runner Kathleen Delaney. Freshman Claire Daniels, also of New Milford, which placed three of the top five runners, won the race in 18:56.
Brown finishes strong
On the boys cross country side, junior Cormac Brown placed 44th in the State Open with a time of 17:02 over the 5k course at Wickham Park.
“Solid race,” said DHS head coach Tyson Kaczmarek. “The time was a little slower than the Class meet, but conditions were night and day. The Class meet was about 35 degrees. It was over 60 degrees at the Open.
“The key is to run about the same as you did at the Class meet,” added Kaczmarek. “That moves you way up in terms of place. Cormac did just that. He had the 75th best time going into the meet based on the Class meet results. He then finished 44th. That’s exactly how you do it.”
Brown helped lead Darien to a ninth-place finish in the Class L championship, at Wickham Park, the previous week.
Brown finished 17th, as the Wave finished with 267 points. Brown crossed the finish line at 16:58, a mere second behind the 16th-place finisher.
“Cormac ran a gutsy race,” said Kaczamarek about Brown’s Class L run. “His splits were better than the last time he raced there. I thought his time would have put him in the top 12, but it didn’t. Thankfully, he still made the State Open.”
