The Darien Blue Wave picked up a huge victory in the FCIAC volleyball playoff chase as they defeated the St. Joseph Cadets, 3-1, Wednesday in Trumbull.
The victory boosted Darien’s records to 12-6 overall and 11-4 in the FCIAC, placing the Wave fifth in the standings. The Wave will face Norwalk in the regular season finale Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Norwalk, with the league tournament starting next Tuesday, Oct. 30.
Darien has clinched a playoff berth, although its final seed and opponent for the quarterfinal round will not be determined until Friday’s matches.
The Wave’s victory snapped a two-game losing streak and gave Darien some momentum heading into the postseason.
St. Joseph, meanwhile, fell out of a three-way tie for first place in the FCIAC, dropping to 12-3 in the league and 14-4 overall. The Cadets host Staples at 5:30 p.m., Friday.
Senior co-captain and setter Cristina Escajadillo led the Wave offense, dishing out 30 assists to go along with two aces.
Senior co-captain Lindsey Bennett collected 13 kills and three aces; and Elaina Cummiskey had eight kills.
For the Cadets, Elena Ball had 17 kills and Kaitlin Capobianco 22 digs for St. Joseph.
