Darien boys cross country tackles Wickham Park Invitational

The Darien boys cross country team geared up for the postseason with by taking part on the annual Wickham Park Invitational on Saturday.

The Blue Wave placed 16th with 481 points in the unseeded race at the meet, which was held at the site of the upcoming state Class and Open championships. Wickham Park is well-known as a difficult course with several challenging hills.

Cormac Brown led the Wave, finishing sixth in 17:05 over the 5k course. Lucas Madariaga was 30th in 18:05. Will Bouton was 65th in 18:45, followed by Matt Guttuso in 142nd in 19:35 and Aram Russell in 174th in 21:48.

“We made some huge gains at Wickham Park,” head coach Tysen Kaczmarek. “That is the toughest course in the state so I am proud of the guys for what they were able to do there.

Darien is 5-7 in dual meets with one more remaining in the regular season. The Wave will run at Staples High School in Westport on Tuesday, before getting ready for the FCIAC championships, which will be run on Wednesday, Oct. 17, in New Canaan’s Waveny Park.

The Wave ran in Waveny last Tuesday, Oct. 2, defeating Wilton 25-30, while losing to New Canaan, 23-36, and Warde, 21-40.

Leading the way once again was the duo of Brown (4th, 17:23) and Madariaga (5th, 17:29) for the 5k course.

Rounding out the top 7 were Bouton (17th, 18:36), Guttuso (27th, 19:08), Spencer Smith (33rd,19:35), Evan O’Rourke (16th, 20;17), and Jack Walsh (28th, 20:37).
