The Darien Blue Wave and Greenwich Cardinals have historically had two of the top field hockey programs in the state, so whenever they match up, there are bound to be fireworks from both sides.

Their latest clash, however, was a dominating Blue Wave performance.

Darien (8-2-0-0) scored the first five goals, including two on penalty strokes by Katie Elders and rolled to a 7-2 victory Thursday afternoon at DHS.

Greenwich (6-4-0-0) got on the board late in the first half and scored again with less than 10 minutes to go in the game, but other than that, the day belonged to Darien.

Bridget Mahoney, Shea van den Broek, and Elders each had two goals for the Wave, and Molly Hellman added one tally to round out the scoring. Mahoney, Daphne Cutler and Catie Duggan each had an assist.

For Greenwich, Ashley Zolan and Courtney Swift scored goals.

The Wave defense was led by goalie Grace Aronshon, and backs Liliana Kulesz, Emily Schwartzman, and Tala Garcia, among others.

Van den Broek opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game, carrying the ball through the circle to the left of the cage and sending a shot over the outstretched arm of the goalie.

Darien made it 2-0 when Cutler sent a perfect centering pass in front to Mahoney for the score, and Elders then added two goals on penalty strokes, going high inside the left post each time.

Mahoney added the Wave’s fifth goal and, in the second half, van den Broek and Hellman found the back of the cage to wrap up the Darien scoring.
