A bunch of graduations and plenty of new faces in new places led to the Darien football team being ranked No. 4 to open the season, despite the fact the Blue Wave had won three consecutive state championships.

Three weeks into the new schedule and Darien is again back on top.

Following their 22-7 victory over the St. Joseph Cadets on Saturday, the Wave is now the No. 1 ranked team in the latest GameTimeCt Top 10 Poll. Darien (3-0), which was ranked No. 3 last week, hopped over Greenwich (2-0), which remained at No. 2. The Cardinals were idle this weekend.

St. Joseph (2-1) dropped to No. 4 with the loss. The Cadets held the No. 1 spot for two weeks after defeating New Canaan 28-0 in week one. New Canaan (2-1) is ranked No. 7 this week.

In its first week at No. 1, Darien will take on Stamford (1-2) at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at DHS. The Black Knights lost to Warde and Ridgefield the first two weeks of the season, but scored their first victory, 19-7, over city rival Trinity Catholic on Saturday.

The Wave’s biggest remaining test before their annual Thanksgiving game against rival New Canaan will come in week five, when Darien hosts the Staples Wreckers. Under first-year head coach Phil Tregila, the Wreckers have started out 3-0, beating Central, Wilton and Brien McMahon.

Staples will square off with Ridgefield at Tiger Hollow at 7 p.m., Friday.
