The Darien High cross country team opened its season winning two of three in its opening tri-meet Tuesday in Ridgefield.
Darien — which next competes in the Wilton Invitational Saturday, Sept. 15 — had three top-10 runners in defeating Stamford (15-49) and Westhill (15-50) but losing to host Ridgefield, which had first-place finisher Tess Pisanelli.
For the Wave, freshman Mairead Clas (16:49) placed third, with Marley Garfield (17:18) eighth and Noelle Kennedy (17:25) 10th.
“Freshman Mairead Clas did well in her first high school race, running against two high quality Ridgefield runners,” said longtime Darien High cross country coach Steve Norris. “Marley Garfield is already running at a higher level as she did during last year’s cross country season, and track runner Noelle Kennedy in her first cross country race showed she put in the training over the summer.”
Darien had solid showings from Sophie Hill (13th at 17:41), Bella Swan (14th at 17:49), Penn Boucher (15th at 17’53), Georgia Sheehan (17th at 18:19) and Julianne Teitler (20th at 18:26) — all finishing in the top 20 as the Wave opened the season with two solid team victories.
Other Darien High finishers were 21. Amalia Madariaga (21st at 18:27), Charlotte Van Ingen (23rd at 18:28), Kate Dempsey (27th at 18:49), Hope Johnson (28th at 18:51), Ridgely Gargano (31st at 19:04), Quincy Balanoff (34th at 19:20), Sofia Mincolelli (35th at 19:21), Mia Sparks (37th at 19:32), Nina Rodriguez (38th at 19:38), Sally Boucher (40th at 19:41), Caroline Hoejsgaard (41st at 19:42) and Emily Depp (42nd at 19:43).
