Distracted Darien driver hits tree, gets caught with marijuana and suspended license

A 30-year-old Darien resident was charged with possession of narcotics, driving with a suspended license, and driving while using a cell phone after striking a tree on Sept 2. According to police, Matthew Byrne said was texting on his cell phone when his foot slipped off the pedal, leading him to hit the tree at about 6:20 p.m.

While investigating the crash, police noted that Byrne’s license was suspended, and detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside his car. Officers found  6.97 grams of marijuana in a bag on the floor of the driver’s seat along with cigar wrappers in the center console. Byrne was determined to not be intoxicated at the scene, but was issued a misdemeanor summons for the above listed charges. He was released from the scene on a promise to appear in court on Sept. 12.
