Darien resident George Walsh will be one of the recipients receiving the post 50th Lifetime Achievement Alumni Award from CUNY Brooklyn College on Sept. 16 at the Brooklyn College Student Center.
On receiving the award, Walsh said, “Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from Brooklyn College was completely unexpected and brought back memories of long ago, memories of people who helped me along the way.”
He then went on to discuss the importance his school and education played in his life. “The learning years of grade school, high school and college did more to shape my life than the war years as a pilot.”
Walsh grew up in Brooklyn and in 1942 became a pilot and fought in WWII as a dive-bomber. He fought in the Battle of Midway and later became the author of the book The Battle of Midway: Searching for the Truth.
On his book, he said, “My book about the Battle of Midway was written to call attention to misinformation being disseminated about the Battle, and a failure to recognize the importance of the Battle on the outcome of World War II. It was the result of 25 years spent searching for the truth about the Battle. My blogs on Google contain more up to date information, and I am still researching. Perhaps the new film being produced about Midway will shed some light.”
