The soul-soothing sounds of the Darien High School jazz ensemble and the Darien Community Band entertained a sunset crowd at Weed Beach on June 6.
The jazz group performed a 45-minute set and included compositions from Duke Ellington and longtime Darien resident and reknowned baritone saxophonist, the late Gerry Mulligan.
The community band, consisting of musicians ranging from high-schoolers to senior citizens played a mix of classical, popular and patriotic tunes.
Both bands are conducted by Darien High band director Jonathan Grauer. “This is always one of our favorite events of the year and we are grateful to the Youth Commission for hosting it,” he said.
Alicia Sillars, Youth Director of the Darien Youth Commission echoed a similar sentiment, “It has been the DYC’s great pleasure to include the DHS Jazz Ensemble and the Darien Community Band in the concert line-ups over the last few years.”
Both bands are expected to reprise the twin bill at the beach next year.
