A recent survey by Safewise named Darien as the number one safest town in Connecticut.

Safewise is an independent review site that rates home security and other security systems. The site also named Darien 54th safest town in the United States.

Safewise, in its article, cited the lower than national average crime rate, 42 %.

“They continue to seek ways to further reduce crime, including those based on race, religion, disability, and gender,” Safewise reported.

Last spring, lawmakers passed House Bill 5743, An Act Concerning Hate Crimes, which touts the strongest hate crime legislation in the country, Safewise reported.

“Equally impressive, no city on our list reported more than one violent crime per 1,000 people in 2016. And the average property crime rate among these cities was 50% less than the U.S. norm, with safe cities such as Greenwich and Simsbury experiencing substantially lower rates of property crime,” Safewise reported.

The researchers used an FBI crime report to determine the rankings.

Darien’s statistics as published by Safewise cited its population as 21,995, violent crimes per 1,000 at .05, and property crimes as 11 out of 1,000. Out of the town’s total crime, less than half of it was violent at .41%, with nearly 100% of it being property crime.

Rounding out the top 10 were Ridgefield, Newtown, Cheshire, South Windsor, Greenwich, Westport, Simsbury, Branford and Guilford.

“Darien has many very special qualities but being ranked the safest town in CT is something we are very proud of!  We have our first responders to thank for this recognition,” First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said in a tweet.

“The members of the Darien Police Department are very pleased to see our town listed as Connecticut’s safest city according to Safewise.  We recognize that there are many people responsible for making Darien the great community it is,” Darien Police Chief Ray Osborne said.

“As Chief of Police, I can attest that the men and women of Darien PD work very hard, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to do everything that we can to keep our community safe and secure for the residents, the business owners and the people who visit and pass through our town.  I am very proud of the work that our officers and civilian staff perform each and every day to help achieve this #1 ranking,” Osborne said.

Darien Police maintain an active social media presence, using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to inform residents of precautionary information, the latest on storm issues and possible road closures, and its latest activity and arrests.

The Darien Police Department is comprised of 51 sworn officers, 18 traffic agents, 10 civilian employees and is headquartered at 25 Hecker Avenue.
