Darien girls hoops tops Staples to clinch state playoff bid

The Darien girls basketball team scored a huge victory in the FCIAC playoff race and nailed down a state tournament bid at the same time, as the Wave topped the Staples Wreckers, 47-36, Tuesday night at DHS.
Staples took a 13-8 lead in the first quarter and led most of the way, but Darien rallied and outscored the Wreckers 22-5 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
Senior co-captain Katie Ramsay was one of the stars, netting a game-high 21 points to lead the charge. All of her points came after the first quarter and she scored eight during the final frame.
Sophomore guard Kelly Richter also hit double digits in scoring with 10 points, and senior co-captain Christine Fiore and sophomore Gwen Dolce each scored five. Dolce and Richter each hit a big three-point bucket in the fourth quarter,
As has been the case in many of their big games, the Wave defense was a key factor, as they limited Staples to just 11 points during the second half, and held leading scorer Elle Fair to eight in the game. Arianna Gerig led Staples with 12 points.
For Darien (8-9 overall, 7-7 FCIAC), the win was a huge boost in its drive for a conference playoff spot. The Wave is still just outside the playoff bubble in ninth place, but faces two sub-.500 teams to close the regular season: New Canaan (3-13) on Thursday, and Westhill (1-15) next Wednesday.
The Wave’s game against rival New Canaan tips off at 5:30 p.m., today, at NCHS.
Darien needs to pass Ludlowe (9-8, 6-7) in order to qualify for the FCIAC playoffs, and Ludlowe has three league games remaining: At St. Joseph (5-12) on Friday, home against Staples (13-5) on Monday, and at Warde (14-3) next Wednesday.
Staples has now lost two straight after falling to Stamford in its previous game.
