Hazelton's late goal gives Darien hockey 3-2 win over Greenwich

The Darien Blue Wave became the first boys ice hockey team to knock off the Greenwich Cardinals this season with a 3-2 victory Saturday night at the Darien Ice House.
Senior co-captain Hunter Hazelton wristed a shot which glanced off of Greenwich goalie Ben Nash and into the net for the decisive goal with 4:01 remaining.
The victory improved Darien’s records to 3-6 overall and 2-0 in the FCIAC, while Greenwich fell to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the FCIAC. The Cards had beaten Darien, 4-3, during the Winter Classic on Dec. 30, but that was a non-conference game and counts towards the state records only.
Hazelton’s winning goal ended a wild game which saw the Wave take a 2-0 lead in the first period only to have Greenwich respond with two goals in under two minutes of the second period.
In the first period, James Gregory ripped off a shot from the point and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 4:58 mark. The play started with some fine play by defenseman Matt Stein to keep the puck in the zone, and Matthew Daileader had an assist after passing the puck from behind the net to set up Gregory.
With 3:22 remaining in the first period, Darien doubled the advantage after CJ Hathaway skated into the zone and charged the net. Hathaway lost the puck but it floated to Hudson Pokorny, who slammed it home for the 2-0 lead.
Greenwich came back in the second frame, as Charles Graves and Matt Baugher scored at 8:55 and 10:43, respectively.
The scored remained 2-2 until late in the third period, when William Dickson sent the puck along the boards high to Hazelton, who stepped toward the net for his game-winner.
