Darien police are investigating a check scam that led to the theft of $700 from an 18-year-old Norwalk Community College student. The student, who is a resident of Fairfield, told police that a man approached him on Nov. 28 and asked if he would be willing to deposit a check into his bank account. The man told the victim he needed to cash the check to help pay off a financial aid bill, and the victim agreed to help with the deposit. The victim willing traveled with the man and another man to the TD Bank in Darien. He entered his PIN into the ATM and allowed the man to deposit two checks totaling $1,800 into his account. He then made three separate withdrawals, $700 in total, from the account. The victim said he was driven back to Norwalk Community College and dropped off.
The bank eventually determined that both checks were deposited from a closed account. The victim told police he didn’t believe that either of the two men he rode to the bank with were students at the college. Both were described as black men wearing casual clothing, one of whom was wearing a black baseball hat and backpack. Police are still investigating the incident, those who may have further information can contact the Darien Police Department at 203-662-5300.
