Police are investigating the use of counterfeit bills at several Darien business during the afternoon of Nov. 11. An employee of a Post Road store contacted police shortly after a man attempted to purchase a book using a $50 bill that appeared old and “not real.” The employee told the customer they did not have enough change in the register to exchange the bill and the man said he would go get change and left the store.
Police canvassed nearby businesses looking for the suspect, who was described as a Hispanic male. Officers determined that the man had visited seven stores in the area and two had exchanged fake $50 bills for change. The counterfeit bills were collected and the United States Secret Service was notified, as in all cases of counterfeiting.
