Lisa Bonchek Adams, 45, of Darien Connecticut, died at 9:45 pm, Friday, March 6, 2015 at her home in Darien, CT. She was born July 29, 1969 in Nashville, Tennessee, to Dr. Lawrence Bonchek and Dr. Rita Bonchek of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She married Clarke Daniel Adams on June 21, 1997. In addition to her parents and husband, Lisa is survived by her daughter Paige (16), and sons Colin (13) and Tristan (8) as well as her brother Mark Bonchek of Weston MA. Lisa was a long time resident of Darien where she lived since she and Clarke moved from New York City in 2004. She graduated from Conestoga Valley High School in Lancaster, PA in 1987, Franklin and Marshall College in 1991, and received her Master’s Degree in Sociology from Rutgers University in 1997.
Lisa enjoyed reading, writing, music and poetry. She dedicated much of her time to caring for and raising her three children and being active in the Darien community, and she leaves behind a loving circle of family and friends. For her compassion, love, and guidance she will be missed by friends who knew her personally and by many friends and admirers who were able to get to know her primarily through her writing and online presence.
Following her diagnosis in January of 2007, Lisa began writing an influential blog, www.lisabadams.com, which dealt with many topics including grief, loss and the experience of being a young mother living with breast cancer. Through her writing, blog, and her prolific Twitter feed (@adamslisa), Lisa was able to describe some of the less well understood realities of the treatment and side effects of living with a chronic disease. Lisa was extraordinarily proud that through her efforts and her writing she was able to build an international following of readers. She educated and comforted many hundreds of patients and their families who found insight in, and took solace from, her descriptions of her experiences with metastatic cancer.
The visitation is from 12:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Rd., in Darien Connecticut. There will be a memorial service at 4:00 PM on Monday, March 16, 2015, at the First Congregational Church, 14 Brookside Road in Darien. A reception will follow the ceremony beginning 5:30 PM at the Country Club of Darien.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a fund whose proceeds will be solely used to support research into metastatic breast cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York. A link to the fund is available on the homepage of her blog at www.lisabadams.com.
