Shirley Nutting Hughes, a lifelong Darien resident, died Friday, March 16, at Waterbury Hospital surrounded by her family. She was 86.
Born on Dec. 20, 1925, Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of the late Clarence M. and Gladys Buck Nutting. She graduated from Darien High School in 1944 and raised four sons in Darien.
Mrs. Hughes worked at Beiersdorf Laboratories in Norwalk for 27 years, and was active in Boy Scouts and the Darien Methodist Church.
She loved the family summer cottage in Maine, but her main pleasure in life was her family, they said.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by four sons and their wives; David and Karen Hughes of Waterford, Robert and Cynthia Hughes of Woodbury, Mark and Barbara Hughes of Milton Mills, N.H., and Brian and Kimberly Hughes of Otisfield, Maine; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Cecile E. Nutting of Southbury.
A celebration of Mrs. Hughes’ life and burial is planned for later this spring in Otisfield, Maine. Arrangements are being made by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.
