Emily Stein scored 17 points to lead Darien over Central on Friday.

And with Stein pacing the Wave with points, it was captain Kate Bushell who led the early charge in the 65-38 blowout at Bridgeport.

“(She) set the tone at the start by going hard to the hoop, hitting foul shots, and cleaning up the boards,” said Wave girls hoops first-year coach Katie Lauten.

Stein connected on five field goals including two three’s and was 1-for-2 from the foul line. She had seven rebounds and made three steals, while Bushell had nine points, went 7-for-9 from the stripe, nabbed 10 rebounds.

Darien led 35-16 at the half and had scoring totals of 18 26-for-39 65.

The Wave rises to 5-3 with New Canaan next on the schedule on Tuesday, while Central drops to 3-8.

Darien is one place out of the FCIAC playoff hunt and in ninth place.

Kate Fiore scored 13 points, went 5-for-9 from the line and snagged 15 rebounds. She had an assist and made a block.

“Double-double — she has been giving us a lot all season defensively, but seems to have really turned a corner on the offensive end now,” said Lauten. “Using strong post moves to get to the hoop and really going up strong to finish her shots.”

Erin Karczewski had five points, two field goals, was 1-for-2 from the line, made five steals, had 3 assists.

Avery Maley scored seven points was 7-for-8 from the line, had three rebounds, an assist, and made a steal.

Kelly Karczewski had 10 points, was 5-for-8 from the stripe, sank a three, had five rebounds, seven assists, and 10 steals for another double-double.

“Aside from being a shooting threat, Kelly is also one of our top defenders,” said Lauten. “She does a great job reading the defense and anticipating where the ball is going.”

Kendra Fitzpatrick put away four points, Claire Naughton swiped two rebounds, made a steal, Kaeleigh Morrill had a rebound.
