Veterans Day in Darien

Hindley School 4th and 5th graders paid tribute to 23 veterans with ties to the Hindley Community. Each veteran was escorted down the “Honor Walk” by a Hindley student. A reception was held in the library after the ceremony. Pictured is Taryn Pardo with her grandfather Navy Veteran Gary Pardo.

This year, because Veterans Day falls on a Sunday, Phil Kraft, chairman of the town’s Monuments & Ceremonies Commission, said Darien’s churches are leading the town’s Veterans Day observances today.

“It is very important that the day be observed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,” Kraft said.

On Monday at 8:30 a.m.,  Michael Cassidy will be dedicating a veterans memorial garden he built at Ox Ridge School as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Kraft said he planning to attend, and parents and grandparents of Ox Ridge students who are veterans have also been invited.

Other school activities planned include a Veterans’ Recognition Ceremony Monday morning at Middlesex Middle School, a flag raising at Royle School, and an all-school assembly Monday morning in two sessions at Darien High School.

Some schools held observances Friday.

The high school is also planning on having speakers and films to honor Veterans Day in the auditorium during each period.
