Darien Y gymnastics among the top teams in the Northeast

The Darien Y gymnastics travel team recently competed at the DSG Northeast Invitational in Hartford with three out of four levels placing in the top three among the top 33 teams at the meet.

In the senior division, Katherine Mosher, Hayley Holzinger and Christina Brandt led the Level 8 girls placing second (34.15), third (33.6), and fourth (32.175), respectively, in the all-around competition.

In the intermediate division, top scorers include Christina Crowell who finished second (34.2) and Jessica Freiheit who finished fourth (32.6).

Samantha Aparicio gave a notable individual performance on beam, placing second, before an injury kept her from finishing the competition.

Lauren Chung led the Level 7 gymnasts in the senior division, placing first overall (34.95) with wins on vault, beam and floor.

Samantha Gunn placed second overall (33.375), capturing the win on bars.

In the intermediate division, Elise Mercein placed seventh overall (34.575), while Kaly Houston placed tenth (33.05). In the child division, Adnerys DeJesus placed second with a high-scoring 36.6, grabbing first on bars.

Coach Vladamir Kovalenko was pleased with the solid start of the 2012 season, which will last through June, and culminate at the YMCA Nationals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
