West Rock turns gold at Challenge Cup

Youth Hockey

The Darien Youth Hockey Squirt A team, sponsored by West Rock Group, was victorious at the NYHL Challenge Cup tournament in Marlborough, Mass. over the weekend.

Darien won the gold when it downed West Haven 5-2 Sunday in the Squirt A division tourney.

Both teams play competitively in the CT Youth Hockey League with West Haven ranked second and Darien fourth.

“It was the consistent play and solid goaltending from Luke Berkowitz and Charlie Flynn during the tournament that prepared the team for a win against West Haven,” Darien coach Mark Wilhelm said. “The boys worked together as a team and showed that they can play a competitive team like number two ranked West Haven.”

Last weekend’s final had West Haven take the initial lead at 11:30 of the second period.

But the game changer came when Darien forward Bennett Ong scored to tie it 1-1, lifting spirits, sparking the team.

Soon Trey Parisi and Patrick Maule made it 3-1 while Flynn was outstanding in the Darien net. Darien added a pair of goals.

West Haven pulled its goalie and with seconds remaining John Reid iced the contest scoring into the empty net.
