It began with lunch. Two friends at Hajime-Sushi in Harrison, New York, were talking about one of their favorite sports. Nothing unusual in that, right? But then one of them floated the idea of starting a website for like-minded enthusiasts. The other looked up from his Toku-Jo and said, “Let’s do it.”

As Blue Wave boys volleyball finishes out its regular season, former Wave standout hitter Cody Coughlin finds that his time on the court has never stopped.

Coughlin (DHS Class of 2008) began his first pro tournament of the year in Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday.

 

Wolfe wins singles at Yale

Kyle Wolfe, a sophomore at Greens Farms Academy from Darien, came home with the singles trophy last weekend at the Fairchester Athletic Association tennis championships, held at Yale.

The FAA boys singles and doubles event began Friday with the top boys from area schools including GreensFarms Academy, St. Lukes, King, Brunswick, Rye Country, Hopkins Hamden Hall and Masters.

Wolfe played number one singles for the team.

Charity tournament celebrates a ‘Decade of Serving’ starting at CCD Friday

The annual “Play in May” tennis tournament presented by Darien Rowayton Bank will be commemorating “A Decade of Serving” Fairfield County youth.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, May 5 at clubs throughout Darien, New Canaan and Norwalk culminating with a lunch and finals matches to be played at the Tokeneke club in Men’s class A, B, Men’s 55 and Women’s A, B and C. All proceeds benefit Norwalk Grassroots Tennis (NGT).

Chelsea Piers Connecticut named David Flower, Westhill High School girls' varsity head coach and seasoned Premier coach, as the Director of Soccer at Chelsea Piers Connecticut.

Flower will work hand-in-hand with Kristine Lilly to build one of the strongest soccer training programs in the northeast.

Flower has more than 14 years of coaching experience in both the UK and US. He currently serves as a U18 and U12 Connecticut Football Club team coach and the head coach of the Westhill High School varsity girls' team.

Starbuck Equestrian, including local rider Hannah Gilhooley, made it a clean sweep of many of the divisions at the Ox Ridge USEF horse show at the hunt club in Darien on April 21.

Survivor’s course: Cancer slayer Bailey blitzes Boston Marathon, raises money for ‘Team In Training’ along the way

Damian Quinn Bailey competed in the Boston Marathon, the hard way.

Quinn Bailey, 36 — who grew up in Darien and went to Hindley School, Middlesex and Darien High, graduated from the University of New Hampshire then received his Masters from BU — made the run wile recovering from a bout with cancer.

Diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in July of 2010 — and with his wife 35 weeks pregnant with their first child at the time — after months of chemo, many rounds of radiation, his cancer is in remission.

This athlete has literally run for his life, and won.

And he’s helping others do the same.
