Obituary: Avery Rogers Brooke, 88, Darien resident was Christian author

Avery Rogers Brooke, an active Darien resident who authored several Christian books, died Monday, Jan. 9, after a long illness. She was 88.

Born in Providence on May 28, 1923, she was educated at Westover School and the Rhode Island School of Design. Mrs. Brooke attended Union Theological Seminary. She authored several books on Christian prayer, meditation, and healing. She was a mentor in the Annand Program of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University.

 

Active in Darien community activities, she was a founder of Darien-Mercara Committee, a patron of the Darien Library, and a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Parish. She was publisher of Seabury Books and president of Seabury Press. She was an Oblate of the Order of the Holy Cross.

Mrs. Brooke is survived by her children, Sarah, Lucy, and Witter and grandchildren Madeleine and Joel.

A service will be held at St. Luke's, 1864 Post Road, on Friday at 1. A private family burial will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
