Obituary: Therese Thomas McKitterick, 91, longtime Darien resident was DCA president

Therese Thomas McKitterick of Darien, who was a past president of the Darien Community Association, died on Thursday, Jan. 5, after a long illness. Mrs. McKitterick, 91, was the wife of John B. McKitterick.

Born in Newton, Mass., in 1920, she grew up in Cambridge, Mass., with her mother Louise Thomas, her father Errold Thomas and her sister Victoria Jacobson. She graduated from Radcliff College in 1942 and met Mr. McKitterick, a graduate of Amherst College, while he was attending Harvard Business School. They married on June 12, 1943, after getting engaged on Valentine's Day that year.

They started their life together in Cleveland, Ohio, where John worked for General Electric and in 1954 moved to Darien when he was transferred to the New York headquarters, where he rose to be a vice president.

Mrs. McKitterick, known as "Teedie" by her friends, worked as a young woman at the Fogg Museum of Art in Cambridge. Later she established and worked in the Tokeneke School library in Darien where her two sons attended. She subsequently served at the Darien Library for many years.

"Teedie was a lovely woman, always fashionable who extended herself to her friends and to her community," her family said. "In recent years she served as President of the Darien Community Association from 1987-90 and was very influential in its development. She placed special importance on the scholarship fund."

Besides her husband of 68 years, Mrs. McKitterick is survived her sons, William George McKitterick and Tom McKitterick; and grandchildren, Simone McKitterick, William McKitterick and Victoria McKitterick. Her caregiver was Norah Santos. And she leaves behind her dog, Pepe.

There will be a memorial celebration at the Darien Community Association on Saturday, Jan. 21, at noon. All are welcome.
