Obituary: Ruth W. Burger, 91, longtime Darien resident, opera singer

Ruth W. Burger, a Darien resident since 1953 who sang in a town opera company for 26 years, died on Saturday, Dec. 17, at Stamford Hospital. She was 91.

Born on May 10, 1920 in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Winters and Grace Hogg Winters.

Mrs. Burger graduated from Stamford High School in 1937. She worked at Pitney Bowes for 19 years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of Darien AARP and sang with Trooper Light Opera Co. in Darien for 26 years.

She is survived by her two children, Raymond J. Burger Jr. of Darien, and Barbara Sauerhoff and her husband John of New Canaan; one grandson, Jes Sauerhoff of New Canaan; one sister-in-law, Margaret Winters of Stamford; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond J. Burger Sr., in 1974 and a son, Todd A. Burger in 2006.

Calling hours are Friday, Dec. 23, from 1-2, at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road. A funeral service will follow at 2 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.
