Obituary: Barbara Woolworth Oakford, former longtime Darien resident, volunteer

Barbara Woolworth Oakford, a former of longtime Darien resident and volunteer, died at her New Canaan home on Monday, Dec. 12. She was 83.

Born in New York City on Jan. 26, 1928, to Margaret Brady Woolworth and Richard W. Woolworth of Salem Center, N.Y.

Mrs. Oakford led an active life dedicated to her large family and her many friends, her family said. She loved golf, skiing and playing bridge where she formed so many friendships over 50 years of living in Darien before she moved to New Canaan. Volunteering at the Stamford Hospital and for the Meals on Wheels program was important to her and she was an active contributor to a wide range of civic and charitable organizations. "She will be deeply missed by her family and friends," they said.

She was married to Malcolm Isdale Oakford for 33 years when he died in 1984. Her two brothers, Sumner and Richard Woolworth, also predeceased her.

Mrs. Oakford is survived by her five children, Richard W. Oakford and his wife Cindy of Darien, Malcolm Douglas Oakford of Portland, Maine, Scott I. Oakford and his wife Eileen of Darien, Lynn O. Reilly and her husband George Reilly of Darien, William B. Oakford and his wife Kathy of Norwalk; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1864 Post Road, on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 11.
