Obituary: Russell C. North, 86, artist grew up in Darien

Russell C. North, a former Darien resident and artist, died Saturday, Sept. 24. He was 86.

Born July 19, 1925, Mr. North graduated from Darien High School in 1943. He attended Syracuse University in the fall, but then enlisted in the Coast Guard, serving during World War II.

After the war, he returned to Syracuse to graduate in 1949.

He then pursued a career in commercial art, working for his father's firm, Charles W. North Studios in New York City. Historically this was the first commercial art studio established in NYC. Creating designs for this firm and eventually managing the company upon his father's retirement, became Russell's life work.

Privately he also produced many drawings and paintings over his lifetime, exhibiting in New York City and Martha's Vineyard.

"Besides his exceptional artistic talent, Russell was known to family and friends for his unabated sense of humor, his zealous love of sports, especially football and his enthusiasm for jazz," his family said. "He had a compassionate nature, and this was particularly evident in his love and care for the numerous dogs that brought joy to his life."

Mr. North is survived by his second wife, Janice Coffman North of New York City; his sister, Marjorie Wadhams of Stamford; his nephew, Russell Wadhams of New York City; and his niece, Christy Ehlers of Riverside. He was predeceased by his first wife, Gail Ross.

A private commemorative gathering will be held.

Contributions can be made to Adopt-a-Dog in Armonk, N.Y.
