Cruise. Streep. Pitt. Clooney.

If the same old names are causing you to roll your eyes in boredom when you hit the movie theater, some local movie makers are offering a breath of fresh film to liven up your winter in early March.

Darien High School graduate Olivia Obin, who graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2010, and former Fairbanks Photo employee Paul Anthony will show their independent films on Thursday, March 1 — one night only — at the Darien Playhouse.

Darienite Obin and Anthony, a Springdale resident, met when they worked at next-door Post Road stores: Obin at Double Exposure and Fairbanks.

Both movies are filmed locally, with Anthony's in Darien and Obin's in a friend's home in Wilton.

Though they are screening the movies together, the two films couldn't be more different, they said.

Anthony, who stars in his film, said it is a comedy and runs full-length, about 90 minutes.

"It is about a New Year's resolution and follows it from January to December," he said.

The main character faces challenges in keeping his resolution, and Anthony said the movie comes "full circle" the following New Year's Eve.

Obin's movie, Anthony said, is "little more weird," with a total running time of 20 minutes.

"It is an experimental, art house film, a series of three short films that examine three creation myths — one is about the ocean, one is about fire, and one is about wind," she said.

Obin, who majored in graphic design at the School of Visual Arts, said she did all of the film's editing at her home in Darien.

Though they are not charging admission for the films, both filmmakers said they'd welcome a suggested donation of $5 to possibly recoup the rental fee of the theater. The Thursday, March 1, event begins at 6 p.m. at the Darien Playhouse, 1077 Post Road, and there will be a short intermission between films
