Darien native Christopher Shays opened his U.S. Senate campaign headquarters Wednesday morning, Jan. 25, at a site that already has senatorial significance.

Shays, who served 21 years as in the House of Representatives, formally announced on Wednesday he is running for Senate during a campaign event in Hartford.

"We've been working for months, but today is the big day," Shays, a Republican, said upon arriving Wednesday in Stratford at his statewide and 3rd Congressional District operations. The former Congressman's run for Senate will be based in the William Samuel Johnson House in Stratford.

Born in Stratford in 1727, Johnson was a clergyman the first president of Kings College (now Columbia University). A lawyer as well, Johnson was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention becoming Connecticut's first U.S. senator.

Shays, who represented the 4th District from 1987 through 2008, is seeking the Republican nomination, also sought by Linda McMahon of Greenwich, for the Senate seat being vacated by Independent Joseph I. Lieberman.
