British theater group brings 'Cinderella' to Town Hall

The British Amateur Theater Group returns to Darien this month for its 2012 pantomime performance of "Cinderella" at Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 28 and 29, at 4.

The production, which benefits the Darien/Norwalk YWCA, has become a tradition for area families each year. "Cinderella" will be performed in British pantomime style which involves theatrical story telling, jokes, music and slapstick humor — they have no connection with the American perception of "mime" and are far from silent.

This year's production is no exception. Who will win the Prince's hand? Just which sister is the uglier? Come and boo the ugly sisters and watch the two mice pull a stagecoach. Cinderella and her fairy godmother are relying on your loud vocal support to help them triumph over evil and poor fashion sense.

"For many years we have loved to share the fun and tradition of pantomime with our American friends. This year is bittersweet for the British Amateur Theater Group because Larraine Brandon, our dedicated producer and director of many years, is retiring," said Kate Stoupas, who will play an ugly stepsister in "Cinderella" and has performed in 11 Pantos.

Each year, the Panto productions have raised money for the YWCA Darien/Norwalk and its community outreach programs. These programs include Parent Awareness, which encourages the positive development of Darien youth by providing education to families. And Job Search Support, which provides women with the support and tools needed to find employment.

Tickets are $10 in advance at the YWCA office, 49 Old Kings Highway North, or online at ywcadariennorwalk.org. Children under 2 can sit on laps for free. Tickets at the door are $12 each, however, the show is likely to sell out so the YWCA encourages you to purchase tickets in advance.
