New team to beat now beaten as No. 1 Wave shut out 4-0 by sixth place rival Rams

Boys Hockey

The new FCIAC boys hockey team to beat found itself beaten.

Coming in the wake of its 4-2 victory over Ridgefield Saturday, to unseat the previously unbeaten-in-the-FCIAC Tigers, the Wave was in turn beaten 4-0 by rival New Canaan at Darien Rink on Tuesday.

Darien holds first place but falls to 9-1 FCIAC, losing for the first time in 11 games.

The Wave is 12-4 overall.

The Rams, in sixth place in the FCIAC going in — but now rising to tie St. Joseph for third — have been inconsistent to say the least, losing to Fairfield this season.

But, showing the jump of a kangaroo all game, the much improved Rams looked like a team to beat themselves, even if they’ve been beaten plenty this season already at 7-3 FCIAC and 11-6-1 overall.

And of course, Darien beat NC 6-1 back before Christmas in a non-league game.

New Canaan led 2-0 after one period — there was a more than half-hour delay between first and second period due to a ref being injured, leaving the game and then the wait for a qualified replacement to materialize — and the Rams lost not a step of its considerable zest through the neutral zone or momentum.

Darien came out the first five minutes when play resumed, went to the net, but came up empty.

Then New Canaan spent most of the period in the Darien end, adding a goal in that stanza and another in the third to wrap up its best outing this season, just when they needed it.

Darien? After Saturday’s triumph, it didn’t need this. Or to lose its top senior captain defenseman, Hank Glick, with a broken thumb against Ridgefield.

Scoring for NC: Peter Richardson, Jake Granito, Dillon Hart shorthanded and Peter Reinhardt.

Chris Koennecke made 12 saves for the shutout.

Darien’s Max Rothston stopped 20 shots in goal.
