(The following story was posted prior to a discovered, admitted data entry error in the pole vault event resulted in Darien not coming in first after all, but landing in second instead. See story on this site for more.)

Darien edged out Windsor for the Class L crown at states.

And the battle lines were familiar ones.

“For the third year in a row, Darien and Windsor fought for the team title,” said Wave indoor girls track coach Steve Norris. “In each year, the margin of victory was less that two points. Darien won by 1.5 points in 2010. Windsor won by 1.0 points in 2011.”

Darien scored 72.50 points to the runner-up's 71 at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Monday.

East Lyme was third with 53.25.

Pacing DHS, Dillon Schoen winning the 600 in 1:39.36, Leah Hotchkiss and Catherine Lacy going 1-2 in the high jump at 5-1, 5-0 respectively.

“All girls were well aware of the history and the likelihood that every point would count,” Norris added. “Indeed, one place lost in one event would have turned our win into a loss.”

Lacy was runner-up in the long jump at 17:01, Grace Loh came in second in the 1000 in 3:00.31, Madeleine Schneider third in pole vault at 9-0, and Jessica Thornbury tied for third at 9-0, Lacy was fourth in the 55 in 7:53, the 4x400 relay fourth in 4:14.74, the sprint relay fourth in 4:32.83, Schneider fifth in the 55 hurdles in 9:34, Katie Donovan fifth in the 300 in 1:44.01, Elisabeth Lowe fifth in the 1600 in 5:26.95, the 4x200 relay fifth in 1:51.25, Anne Johnston fifth in the 3200 in 11:47.96, Taylor McDonald seventh in shot put at 30-01, Elizabeth Fucigna 10th in the 300 in 44.13.

“Pole vault was the last event to score, and we were down five points to Windsor, Windsor had no vaulters...” Norris said. “The third place tie points garnered by Thornbury and Schneider put us over the top.”
