Darien High place-kicker/punter Chris Smith has signed an offer from Elon University in North Carolina this week.

He was Darien’s second leading scorer with 50 points last season.

“Chris had never played football until his junior year when he decided to give it a shot and the rest as they say is history,” said Wave football coach Rob Trifone. “He currently holds most of our place-kicking records, including most PAT’s, most field goals, longest field goal.”

Smith punted 25 times for 783 yards, averaging 31.32, his longest 52 yards, six going inside the 20 his senior year last season.

He kicked off 52 times for 2,970 yards. His longest kick was 60 yards and Smith caused 14 touchbacks.

Averaging five points per game, Smith kicked 35 points in PAT and made five field goals.

“Chris is a very dedicated, hard working young man who will do very well at the next level,” Trifone said. “It has been an honor to coach him.”
