Lacy takes three events, Wave wins FCIAC East ninth straight time

Darien won its ninth FCIAC East title in a row at Wilton on Saturday.

The Wave girls indoor track team scored 170.2 points to run away from the runner-up hosts with 87.6, Warde in third with 79, fourth place New Canaan 77.2, fifth St. Joseph 35 and sixth place Bassick with 10.

Darien swept all four relays and Catherine Lacy won three events on her own to lead the top places parade.

“No other athlete placed first in more than one event,” said Darien veteran coach Steve Norris.

Darien won the 4x225 relay in 2:12.51 with Elizabeth Fucigna (33.2), Maddie Schneider (33.1), Sherry Gilronan (32.8) and Dani Dunn (33.3) doing the honors.

“All but Gilronan are freshmen,” Norris said.

In the first place 4x750, making the rounds in 9:33.81 were Sarah Colon (2:23.7), Claire Walker (2:29.6), Caity Lowden (2:20.8) and Dillon Schoen (2:19.8) for a school record, beating out last season’s 9:49.56 set by Sarah Colon, Ellen Bauer, Katie Farren, Grace Loh.

First in the 45 hurdles was Maddie Schneider in 8.40, running it in 8.36 in trials.

Said Norris: “Freshman Schneider continues to improve.”

For the Wave, Leah Hotchkiss finished in 8.76, Amanda Percarpio 9.07, Jess Jones 9.17.

In the 45 it was Lacy in first in 6.51. She ran 6.49 in trials.

Sixth was Brittany Henry in 6.81, going 6.80 in trials, and Gilronan done in 6.87.

Loh won the 1000 in 3:09.82 with Alex Pear finishing in 3:25.79, Barbara Bell in 3:35.39.

“Loh’s performance bodes well for a top performance in the FCIAC championship,” Norris added.

Schoen took the 600 in 1:47.37, second was Katie Donovan in 1:48.67 and Sophie Long finished in 1:53.13.

In the medley relay, first in 4:23.6 were Claire Gaffney (36.6, 78.5), Dunn (22.0), Henry (21.8), Loh (68.9), (2:21.4). They missed a school record by only 1.6 seconds.

Winning the 4x375 in 4:10.4, Dunn (65.4), Stauffer (61.2), Heaney (62.9), Donovan (60.9).

Lacy’s high jump was tops at 4-10, fifth was Leah Hotchkiss 4-8, sixth Smith 4-6.

Rookie pole vaulter Jess Thornbury won at her first title meet rising to 9-4. It was a personal record for her as well.

In second place, was Schneider 8-6, tied for fourth Grace Brown 78-6 and Eleanor Smith had a vault of 7-6.

And Lacy won the long jump landing at 16-8. Second was Eleanor Smith 14-5, Gaffney jumped 13-6.75.

Taylor McDonald’s 29-6 shot put put her in second place. Victoria Kominek tossed the iron ball 27-2, Natalie Metz 23-2.

“McDonald had her best throw of the season,” Norris said.

Fourth in the 1600 was Anne Johnston in 5:37.94. Next was Sarah Colon in 5:41.71, Meredith Ott 5:48.33.

Fucigna was third in the 300 in 45.54, fifth was Cassidy Stauffer in 46.58, Liz Heaney ran it in 47.43, Gilronan 47.76, Henry 51.00.

Third in the 3200 was Elisabeth Lowe in 12:30.0, Katie Farren ran it in 12:38.4, Walker 13:21.59.

The FCIAC Championships come Thursday at Hillhouse in New Haven.

“A three way battle is expected between last year’s champions Danbury, Darien and Greenwich,” Norris said.
