Tumblers take first FCIAC meet, Southworth leads

Updated 8:55 PM — After a fitful start to the weather delayed schedule this winter, Darien gymnasts got by Trumbull 127.9-117.20 for their first FCIAC victory of the season, at home, on Jan. 24.

The Wave, 3-1 FCIAC, went on to beat Greenwich but lose to a powerhouse in Wilton at Darien on Saturday.

Darien defeated the Cardinals 138.70-125.10 away on Thursday.

On Saturday it was the Warriors ahead of DHS 139.1-133.35, with Westhill also competing, coming in third with 109.10.

First win results

Wave 127.9, Eagles 117.20

Senior captain Katie Southworth won the all-around with a 34.30 and was first on vault with 8.7, bars (8.4) and beam (8.6), plus she tied for first on floor with a 8.6.

Samantha Gunn and Lauren Chung tied for third in the all-around with 31.55.

Gunn tied for third on vault with 8.2, was third on bars with 7.9, third on floor with 8.3, fourth on beam with 7.3.

Chung was second on beam with 8.3, fourth on vault with 8.1, had 7.7 on floor, 7.5 on bars.

Katherine Mosher, a senior captain, took fourth on floor with an 8.0.

“An aggravated injury prevented her from performing on beam which took her out of the all-around competition,” said Wave first-year coach Ellie Southworth of the usually front-running Mosher, a four-season standout with Katie Southworth.

Freshman Kajsa Lundeen placed sixth in the all-around with a 27.70 — scored 7.8 on vault, 7.3 on floor, 7.1 on beam and 5.5 on bars.

And freshman Sarah Morgan Petti competed for the first time for the Wave after healing from a sprained ankle.

“She performed well on vault (7.5) and beam,” Southworth said.

Flying by the Cards

Southworth won the AA with 35.10 and was first on bars with 9.05, tied for first on floor scoring 9.15 with Mosher matching her.

She also tied for second on beam with 8.5, again locked up with Mosher, and tied for third on vault with Gunn scoring 8.4.

Mosher: She was second AA with 35.05.

She came in first on vault with 8.6, tied for top spot on floor with 9.15, as noted above, tied for second on beam with 8.5 and was runner-up on bars with 8.8.

Gunn, a freshman, was third AA with 34.50.

And she was second on floor with 9.1, tied for second on vault with 8.4, was third on bars with 8.6, tied for third on beam scoring 8.4, level with Chung.

Chung, also a freshman, came in fifth AA with 34.05. She landed second on vault (8.5), tied for third on beam (8.4) with Gunn, tied for fifth on bars (8.35), was fifth on floor (8.8).

Lundeen, “Did well on her three events,” said coach Southworth.

She scored 8.3 on vault, 7.7 on beam and 8.35 on floor.

Junior Marya vonSchmidt, added Southworth, “Scored nicely on floor (8.25) and vault (8.0).”

Competing in her first meet was Kathryn Ledwith, an 11th grader, scoring 5.9 on vault.

As for Saturday, Darien did damage in the face of a tough visiting Warriors troupe, led by a league leader of the past several years in Chelsea LeVander.

“Wilton proved to be very strong on bars and floor,” said Southworth. “But Darien won the top placements on vault and beam.”

Mosher was second AA scoring 34.60.

She won with a powerful, rising vault scoring 8.9, and took beam with an 8.95.

Mosher came in fourth on floor with 8.55 and fifth on bars with 8.2.

Southworth was third AA with 34.55.

She came in second on vault with 8.75, tied for second on beam with 8.9, knotting it up with none other than LeVander.

Southworth was third on bars with 8.5 and tied for fifth on floor with 8.4.

Gunn was sixth AA with 32.65.

She came in sixth, on vault with 8.35, and on floor with 8.3.

Chung posted a 31.55 AA.

“She showed her strength on vault (8.2) and beam (8.1),” coach Southworth said. “Lundeen continues to improve with an AA of 28.40. She posted an 8.0 for her vault.

Von Schmidt scored 27.90 in the AA. Her best scores were 7.7 on vault and 7.0 on bars.

And Ledwith, “Improves her vaulting, scoring a 6.2,” Southworth added.
