Biggart basket, Bushell rebounds snag victory in tight tilt with Staples

Girls Basketball

It was last girl standing in Darien’s 46-43 win over Staples.

“Amy Biggart made some big free-throws (near) the end of the game,” said Wave girls basketball coach Gary Peterson following the home contest on Thursday.

And then, with Darien up by one, and last seconds fast evaporating in the fourth quarter, the Wave made another foul shot, missed one, and Kate Bushell grabbed the rebound.

Darien went to the line again and Bushell hauled down the rebound once more.

“And we win the game,” said Peterson. “Kate Bushell got two big — huge — offensive rebounds. They didn’t get a chance to tie us up.”

It was Staples ahead by two after one quarter and the Wreckers outscored Darien 8-5 in the second for a 18-17 lead at the half.

The Wave again trailed 13-11 for the third.

But Darien popped up to outscore Staples 18-12 in the fourth quarter.

Darien rises to 7-5, Staples drops to 8-4.

Meg Marren led all scorers with 17 points, although she dried at the line going an uncharacteristic 3-for-15.

Bushell scored 15 points and went 4-for-8 from the line, Biggart had eight points and went 3-for-4 from the line, Kelly Karczewski had three points, Emily Stein three, Leslie Yuen contributed.

Wave scoring totals were 15 10-29 46.

Staples totals: 14 9-17 43.

“It was neck and neck all game,” Peterson said.

Confidence going in, that DHS can in fact play with anybody, in this FCIAC, was the margin for victory.

A little sharper from the foul line, and the margin would have been a lot larger.

“Last night, we shot 10 for 29... And we won the game,” Peterson said.

And it was a win Darien needed, making it a three-game streak.

“Because I look out there and we had Trinity and Staples and now Danbury, and I was talking to my assistant coach and I said, we’ve got to get one,” Peterson added. “But we’ve got both, and we beat Danbury the last two years.”

The Wave next plays the Hatters at home on Tuesday.

“We can do it again,” said Peterson. “I think we can beat any team in this league, but, you’ve got to play the games.

“It’s funny, I think we’re gelling right now.”

The Hatters are on top of the league at 9-0 FCIAC, 11-0 overall.

“And we’ve got a lot of winnable games left,” said Peterson. “Anybody can beat anybody, you just have to come to play. And we came to play last night.”
